An ancient site was found by residents in Ngenep Hamlet, Karangploso District, Malang Regency, Saturday (3/10/2020).
It is suspected that the archaeological site originates from the era of the Singosari Kingdom.
The residents first discovered the site when there was a plengsengan for the construction of a housing project in Ngenep Hamlet, Karangploso District.
The site found was a brick structure that had been buried in the ground.
In addition, pottery, earthenware and copper were found.
Archaeologist from the State University of Malang (UM), Dwi Cahyono, estimates that the structure is a residual building for residents during the Singosari Kingdom era .
"This brick structure cannot be separated from the existence of a water source or an umbulan. Especially for ancient people, water sources were considered important for settlements," he told TribunJatim.com.
He explained that the dimensions of the brick were about 9 centimeters (cm) thick and about 20 cm wide.
"The brick structure is estimated to be younger than the brick structure found at Langlang Site, Langlang Village, Singosari District, Malang Regency. The Karangploso area in ancient times was a satellite area or a buffer for the Singosari Kingdom," he added.
Because it is adjacent to a housing construction project, the discovery of an ancient brick structure has been fitted with police lines as an effort to sterilize the area.
Residents have also reported the findings to the Malang Regency Government, so that further research can be carried out by the Trowulan Cultural Heritage Research Institute (BPCB), East Java.
"Still, the one who will conduct the research will be BPCB Trowulan. To know more clearly what building it is," he said.
